3D is one of the subjects that have never been given any thought on Designzzz. Today I’d like to experiment and post a collection of free 3D and CAD software programs.
All these programs are free to use and happen to be the best 3D graphics programs available free of charge.
Tell me, would you like to see 3D related posts being published at Designzzz?

Nothing beats SketchUp in simplicity and creativity. This is the tool which taught me how 3D graphics work. Google SketchUp is a blend of CAD, 3D modeling and animation.
Although it is a basic level program, it is still very very powerful. The ability to download pre-made 3D models from online libraries makes it more tempting than any of its competitors.
I am copying a sentence from their own website which defines this software:
“Many of its capabilities rival those found in commercial programs. Highlights include subdivision surface based modelling tools, skeleton based animation, and a graphical language for designing procedural textures and materials.”
If you are into 3D, you might already know about this program. Many 3Dians are in love with Blender. It is advanced and includes many features such as UV unwrapping, texturing, rigging, water simulations, particle and other simulations, non-linear editing, compositing, and creating interactive 3D applications, did I mention animation…
Working method in this program is a bit different but I think you’ll like it. It features a plugin-oriented procedural engine for all the tasks it performs, this makes K-3D a very flexible yet potent package. The source says:
“K-3D excels at polygonal modeling, and includes basic tools for NURBS, patches, curves and animation.”
I personally find this software a little bit boring. It can’t really perform all the 3D tasks needed, but what it does, does great. I would recommend beginners to acquaint with SketchUp and then switch to Anim8or. These two programs give away the complete idea of Modeling.
This is the best CAD application available free of charge. You can create customized 3D graphics and it also works great for making surfaces, solid or triangle modeling. On the other hand, the files can only be saved in their proprietary format, but that’s not a big problem at all.
The advance level of modeling makes the model seem realistic. It is easy to use and still enables you to work at a rapid speed. Features include:
WYSIWYG, Infinite Undo/Redo, Outputs clean efficient files, Fast efficient program, Exports to VRML, X3D Obj and POV-Ray formats, Imports VRML and X3D VRML Classic formats, Imports & Exports HAnim, Imports Canal/Blaxxun Avatar Studio avatars, Imports & Exports BVH motion capture files, Single skinned mesh animation, Morphing, Beziers & NURBS lathes and NURBS patches, Nurbs Surface Poly Editing (NSPE), Tangent matched NURBS Surface Fusion, Polygon subdivision, Sound synthesis using NURBS, Intuitive animation bar Robot demonstration help, Scripting and Multi-User 3D chat web browsing.
