Responsive Email Newsletter Design Tips

Reading emails on mobile devices is an experience that can be equally good or bad. A superb looking email newsletter in the inbox, may be squeezed onto a small screen and become an unusable one due to narrow columns, small fonts and broken layouts.

A huge proportion, almost half of the subscribers of your newsletter are likely to read the email on their smartphones, or some kind of mobile device like an iPad or something. Naturally you want your email to be read perfectly on mobile devices as well as computers. That’s why you are reading this, isn’t it. 😉

The concept of responsive email designs has been growing steadily in popularity, and it’s no surprise as to why 48% of emails are opened on a mobile device, while some brands observe the upwards of 70% in this respect. These are the brands that had turn to responsive design techniques and created better experiences for the subscribers, and so got an increase in their click and engagement rates.

It means that your email newsletter should be displayed optimally on mobile devices as same as it is readable in email clients such as Outlook and Gmail. In fact, the growing percent of internet enable smartphone users shows that a ‘less-than-optimal’ reading experience on cell phones’ small screen may inconvenience the majority eventually in near future. This experience could cause the diminished response rates.

I saw the following infographic on Litmus. It was highly relevant to so I’ve added it here. Please click the image to view full infographic.

Designing Responsive Emails

Designing a layout for mobile devices isn’t simply a matter of just writing mobile-specific CSS. There are other things to be considered as well.

  1. Single Column: The layout should consist of a single column, not wider than 500 to 600 pixels. This will be working the best on mobile devices. It’ll be easier to read, and even if they fall apart, be more graceful.
  2. Spacing and Margins: Buttons and links should have a target area of 44 × 44 pixels minimally. Clouds of tiny links on touch-screen devices are absolutely unusable.
  3. Font Size: On iPhone, the minimum font size displayed is 13 pixels, anything smaller than it could break the layout.
  4. Short and Sweet: Keep your message concise.
  5. Important First: It will be better if you place all important elements at the upper portion of the email. You know, scrolling for miles is harder on a touch-screen than on a laptop or PC with a mouse.
  6. Display properly: Try to use display: none; in your mobile layout due to hide extraneous details. The elements such as social sharing buttons are great in the desktop inbox, but they aren’t usually easy to use for the recipients on mobile devices.
  7. Separate Mock-ups: Remember to create two separate mock-ups whenever designing a responsive email. Create one wireframe or sketch for desktop and one for mobile screens.
  8. CTA: Make sure your call-to-action (CTA) appears instantly on both screens immediately when the email is opened. The recipient shouldn’t have to scroll to see it.

Apart from these tips, designers need to follow the proper anatomy of responsive emails and Dotmailer have made a guide for that.

What can I say. That’s a flat lie they are speaking on their website.
You are right, they send links to themeforest templates, not free ones, so I’m removing their links from the post.

      Thank you for the feedback.
