One of the many interesting things of note about flat design is the way fonts help beautify the design and send information to the viewer. And because the flat design website are anchored so much in color combination and beautiful typography, fonts become essential to every design.
Because of the simplicity and adaptability of flat design user interfaces, even common typefaces work. However, opting for something more attractive and readable is better than settling for what’s already cliché.
Remember, that if you want your design to stand out among the rest of your competitors, it has to look different and look beautiful. And outstanding typefaces can help you with that.
Now Google has been doing a great job in helping designers use creative fonts using their Google Fonts service. Personally, I prefer these fonts because they are directly hosted by Google and are easier to use than putting several fonts into your server.
I have collected a few Google Fonts that really beautify any flat web design. Here are they:
This typeface is neat-looking and suggests a feel of modernity and professionalism. It is a sans-serif face that is designed with open forms and an intuitive appearance. You can use Open Sans in print, web and mobile interfaces. So, it becomes a useful font face for your projects.
Rale way can transform any simple design into elegant showcases of typography. It is a lightweight font that can be expanded into thin, extra light, light, bold and regular.
Lato is my personal favorite. This sans serif typeface simply is the perfect representation of flat design. With its five weights ranging from 100 to 900, using this typeface will give your design stability, neatness and professional look.
Source Sans Pro, a sans serif typeface allows your design to have great amounts of breathing space with its width. With the combination of minuscule and miniscule letters, this face gives your readers a better and more facilitated reading experience, especially in long and text-heavy designs.
This Slab Serif typeface comes in five weights with italics. It is versatile and can fit to any design need you may have. Simply put, this font is a brainchild of toughness and creativity.
PT Serif is a beautiful flat design typeface that appears beautifully in background images. It is also a great body font. It comes in bold, regular and italic font weights.
Another personal favorite is Lobster. This font family is normally used in headings and looks good in any background too. It is one of the most popular script typefaces that I have had the fortune of encountering.
Poiret offers a fresh view of decorative and geometric feels in typefaces. It is a unique font-family that is just reeking of elegance, grace and stylishness. Can be used for lager signs like labels and headings, this font can turn any design into flat and beautiful.
Oleo is another great script typeface. It establishes a flowy feel in the design using its legible non-connected format. It shows to be suitable in situations where you need the formality script brings and the legibility of sans serifs.
Roboto has two sides: it is geometrically large and it features open curves. This means that letters are allowed to be settling for their natural widths making the design more naturally rhythmic. It also gives your website a feel of modernity and legibility.
Now these font families surely are the best when it comes to flat design. You can always mix and match these typefaces but remember to do them creatively. And please, refrain from using the cliché fonts over and over again. Remember, the font-police is watching you. Good luck!
